South London Voting Session

I ran a mobile phone voting session at the Guy's Hospital South London Study Day/ Advanced Airway Management alongside Dr Imran Ahmad (Consultant Anaesthetist at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust). This produced lots of interesting discussion and some interesting charts. The longer the session went on the more focused the opinions became with some potential answers being dismissed altogether as the audience was became more and more informed - learning in action. The feedback was refreshing. It seems people enjoy interactive sessions like this and this is really no surprise. With the smaller number of people here (and an average response of around 40 people per question) the lecturer was able to encourage people who had chosen less popular answers to discuss their reasons. I'd say it worked well. Here is the feedback, which demonstrates the value of interactive case based discussions.

Resus Algorithms v1.2.2 for iOS

The new, tweaked version of Resus Algorithms was actually released a few days ago. The tweaks just make some of the buttons look better and format the tables a little bit better for iPhone screens. You can still get them both from the usual places. iOS version Android version Subjective Effect is working on some new apps. Watch this space for things happening in February and March.

Universal Anaesthetic Chart

We're probably never going to get a true Universal Anaesthetic Chart because of differences in standards across countries, but we could have a National Chart in the same way as Wales has had the All Wales Drug Chart for several years. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3477322/ In particular it has been suggested that " The movement of doctors between hospitals within the NHS is now substantial and hospital-based non-medical prescribers are also beginning to move around the UK. This only makes an even stronger case for moving from independently developed prescription charts to a common approach."   http://www.aomrc.org.uk/projects/standards-in-patient-prescription-charts.html There is a group working on standardising the nomenclature of Anaesthetic Charts for electronic records and compatibility with HL7 ( http://www.hl7.org.uk/ ) and so on. In the meantime I've been developing something in conjunction with Dr Richard Griffiths of the AAGBI . Towar...

The Power Of Voting - DAS Ascot 2013

I administered the mobile phone voting system at the DAS Meeting 2013 at Ascot ( http://www.das.uk.com ) and I think all who attended agreed that this type of interactivity added a lot of flavour and stimulation to the discussion of the case presentations. These are some samples of the results. This first one is from a comparison between the expert panel, comprised of 7 members, and the audience, 140 of whom responded. Experts & The Audience This was a case regarding a large wound haematoma secondary to C-spine surgery. The haematoma was anterior to the larynx causing severe narrowing of the airway with stridor. Unfortunately I don't have the CT image from the presentation. Of the four options (and one "other") the expert panel was split between the two awake options on offer. The audience, whilst largely agreeing with the experts, gave a wider range of choices with a significant number of people opting for IV induction. Bear in mind - the audience d...
